Author Guidelines

Welcome to the Jambura Journal of Biomathematics (JJBM). To ensure a smooth and efficient publication process, we kindly ask all authors to read and strictly follow these guidelines before submitting a manuscript.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Ethics in Publishing

For information on Ethics in Publishing and Ethical guidelines for journal publication, authors must ensure that the submitted work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

Authorship and CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy)

JJBM is committed to transparency in authorship. We follow the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) system. Authors are required to provide a CRediT authorship contribution statement during submission to detail the specific contributions of each author.

The 14 standard CRediT roles are detailed below. Authors should assign multiple roles where applicable:

  • Conceptualization: Ideas; formulation or evolution of overarching research goals and aims.

  • Data curation: Management activities to annotate (produce metadata), scrub data, and maintain research data (including software code, where it is necessary for interpreting the data itself) for initial use and later reuse.

  • Formal analysis: Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize study data.

  • Funding acquisition: Acquisition of the financial support for the project leading to this publication.

  • Investigation: Conducting a research and investigation process, specifically performing the experiments, or data/evidence collection.

  • Methodology: Development or design of methodology; creation of models.

  • Project administration: Management and coordination responsibility for the research activity planning and execution.

  • Resources: Provision of study materials, reagents, materials, patients, laboratory samples, animals, instrumentation, computing resources, or other analysis tools.

  • Software: Programming, software development; designing computer programs; implementation of the computer code and supporting algorithms; testing of existing code components.

  • Supervision: Oversight and leadership responsibility for the research activity planning and execution, including mentorship external to the core team.

  • Validation: Verification, whether as a part of the activity or separate, of the overall replication/reproducibility of results/experiments and other research outputs.

  • Visualization: Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically visualization/data presentation.

  • Writing – original draft: Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically writing the initial draft (including substantive translation).

  • Writing – review & editing: Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work by those from the original research group, specifically critical review, commentary or revision – including pre- or post-publication stages.

  • Please review further details on the standard roles here: https://credit.niso.org/

  • Example Statement: Author A: Conceptualization, Methodology, Software. Author B: Data curation, Formal analysis, Writing – original draft. Author C: Supervision, Funding acquisition, Writing – review & editing.

Declaration of Competing Interest

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

LaTeX Requirement and Template

To maintain high-quality typesetting standards for mathematical formulas and equations, JJBM requires all manuscripts to be prepared using LaTeX. Word documents (e.g., .doc, .docx) will not be accepted.

Authors must use the official JJBM LaTeX template. Please download the template and the accompanying class/style files from the following link:

Language

Please write your text in good, grammatically correct English (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of these).

Article Structure

Manuscripts should generally be structured in the following order:

  • Title: Concise and informative. Avoid abbreviations and formulae where possible.

  • Author Names and Affiliations: Clearly indicate the given name(s) and family name(s) of each author. Present the authors' affiliation addresses below their names. Indicate the corresponding author clearly with an asterisk (*).

  • Abstract: A concise and factual abstract is required (maximum 250 words). The abstract should state the purpose of the research, the principal results, and the major conclusions.

  • Keywords: Provide a maximum of 4-6 keywords, separated by commas.

  • 1. Introduction: State the objectives of the work and provide an adequate background, avoiding a detailed literature survey or a summary of the results.

  • 2. Mathematical Model / Methodology: Provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be reproduced. For biomathematics papers, clearly define all parameters, variables, and the mathematical model formulation.

  • 3. Results: Results should be clear and concise.

  • 4. Discussion: This should explore the significance of the results of the work, not repeat them. A combined Results and Discussion section is often appropriate.

  • 5. Conclusions: The main conclusions of the study may be presented in a short Conclusions section.

  • CRediT Authorship Contribution Statement: (See Section 1).

  • Declaration of Competing Interest: State any conflicts of interest.

  • Acknowledgements: Collate acknowledgements in a separate section at the end of the article before the references.

  • References: See formatting details below.

Math Formulae

Please submit math equations as editable text within the LaTeX environment (e.g., using equation, align, or eqnarray environments) and not as images. Present simple formulae in line with normal text where possible and use the solidus (/) instead of a horizontal line for small fractional terms, e.g., X/Y.

Figures and Tables

  • Figures: Ensure all figures are high-resolution and legible. Vector graphics (EPS or PDF) are strongly preferred for mathematical plots and graphs. PNG or JPG are acceptable for standard images. Center the figures and provide a descriptive caption below each figure.

  • Tables: Please submit tables as editable LaTeX text and not as images. Place footnotes to tables below the table body and indicate them with superscript lowercase letters.

REFERENCES

JJBM uses the Vancouver referencing style. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in square brackets, e.g., [1], [1, 2], or [1-3].

Please ensure you use the correct BibTeX style (\bibliographystyle{vancouver}) if you are using a .bib file in LaTeX, which is highly recommended.

Examples of Vancouver Style:

  • Reference to a journal publication:

Kermack WO, McKendrick AG. A contribution to the mathematical theory of epidemics. Proc R Soc Lond A. 1927;115(772):700-721.

  • Reference to a book:

Murray JD. Mathematical Biology: I. An Introduction. 3rd ed. New York: Springer; 2002.

  • Reference to a chapter in an edited book:

SUBMISSION PROCESS

JJBM uses Open Journal Systems (OJS) 3 for managing the submission and peer-review process.

  1. Register/Login: All authors must register an account on the JJBM OJS portal. If you already have an account, simply log in.

  2. Start a New Submission: Click on "New Submission" in your user dashboard.

  3. Step 1: Start: Select the appropriate section for your manuscript and check all the submission preparation checklists.

  4. Step 2: Upload Submission: Upload only the compiled PDF version of your manuscript as the Primary File. Please do not upload your LaTeX source files at this initial submission stage.

  5. Step 3: Enter Metadata: Carefully input all author details, title, abstract, keywords, and references exactly as they appear in your manuscript.

  6. Step 4 & 5: Confirmation: Review your submission and click "Finish Submission".

You will receive an automated email confirmation once your submission is successfully received by the system. You can track the status of your manuscript by logging into the OJS platform.

AFTER ACCEPTANCE

Submission of Source Files

Upon acceptance of the manuscript, the corresponding author will be contacted by the editor and required to send the complete LaTeX source files (including the .tex file, .bib file, and all figure files) compressed into a single .zip folder. This is necessary for final typesetting and publication.

Proofs

Once a manuscript is accepted and source files are provided, the corresponding author will receive PDF proofs. Please check the proofs carefully for typesetting, editing, completeness, and correctness of the text, tables, and figures. Significant changes to the article as accepted for publication will only be considered at this stage with permission from the Editor.

Publication

Upon final approval of the proofs, the article will be published online in the upcoming issue of JJBM.
